Legal Operations Consultant for Canadian Law Firms
We help great lawyers build great businesses.
ClearPoint was built on a simple idea: solo and small law firms deserve the same operational rigour as the largest firms in the country — delivered in a way that fits how they actually work.
Why ClearPoint exists
Running a small firm often means wearing every hat, whether you planned to or not.
Spend enough time managing legal operations at law firms and you see something clearly: the lawyers who thrive aren't necessarily the ones working the hardest. They're the ones whose firms are built to support them — with systems that capture time reliably, processes that move files forward without constant intervention, and technology that actually does what it's supposed to do.
Solo and small firm lawyers are often exceptional at the practice of law. What they didn't go to law school for — and shouldn't have to become experts in — is billing optimization, trust accounting compliance, practice management configuration, and operational strategy. That's not a criticism. It's just reality. And it's exactly the gap ClearPoint was built to close.
What I see consistently — both from legal tech thought leaders and inside large firms — are solutions designed for organizations that already have the infrastructure to absorb them. Complex overhauls. Expensive software implementations. Boil-the-ocean strategies that require months of disruption before anything improves. That approach makes sense for a 200-lawyer firm with a full operations team behind it. It doesn't in a solo practice where the lawyer is also the managing partner, the billing department, and the person answering the phone.
ClearPoint exists to do something different. We meet firms where they are. We identify the changes that will have the biggest impact on profitability and efficiency — and we implement them in a way that's practical, sustainable, and doesn't require your practice to stand still while we work. Big wins don't always require big overhauls.
The founder
Michael Stephens — Founder & Principal Consultant

Michael Stephens
Founder & Principal Consultant, ClearPoint Legal Consulting
Michael brings 20 years of hands-on legal operations experience to every ClearPoint engagement — experience built inside some of Canada's largest national law firms, where he led complex initiatives across technology implementation, process design, billing optimization, financial management, and business development.
That background gives him something many legal operations consultants don't have: a ground-level understanding of how law firms actually function under pressure. The difference between a well-designed process and one that survives contact with a busy practice. The gap between software that's configured correctly and software that people actually use. The specific compliance requirements that keep Ontario lawyers up at night.
He founded ClearPoint to take that expertise directly to the firms that need it most — and to deliver it in a way that fits their reality. Not complex overhauls designed for large firm operations teams. Practical, high-impact improvements that a solo lawyer or a small firm can implement, sustain, and build on.
Outside of work
When he's not helping law firms run better, Michael can usually be found on the waters of Georgian Bay — or serving his Muskoka community as an active Volunteer Firefighter.
How we work
The ClearPoint approach — practical by design.
There's no shortage of consultants who will sell you a complex transformation. ClearPoint is built around a different philosophy — one that starts with where your firm actually is, not where a methodology says it should be.
We meet you where you are
We don't arrive with a predetermined solution. Every engagement starts with an honest assessment of your current situation — what's working, what isn't, and what the highest-impact changes would be for your specific firm. The plan follows the diagnosis, not the other way around.
Simple solutions, real results
The best solution isn't always the most sophisticated one. For most solo and small firms, the biggest gains come from fixing the fundamentals — time capture, billing workflows, intake consistency, trust accounting hygiene. We focus there first, because that's where the money is.
Results this quarter, not next year
We don't believe in engagements that require months of disruption before anything improves. Every ClearPoint project is designed to deliver visible, measurable improvements quickly — so you can see the value before committing to the next step. Progress compounds when you start with wins.
A partner, not just a project
Most ClearPoint engagements start with a defined project — fix the billing workflow, get Clio properly configured, prepare for a Spot Audit. But the firms that see the most sustained improvement are the ones that keep an experienced operations eye on things ongoing. Many of our clients retain ClearPoint as a fractional operations lead after the initial work is done — a few hours a month to keep things moving, catch problems early, and support the next stage of growth.
Certifications
Certified in the platforms your firm depends on.
ClearPoint holds active certifications from both Clio and CosmoLex — Canada's two most widely used legal practice management platforms. Combined with 20 years of operational experience and a PMP designation, these credentials mean your engagement is in the hands of someone who knows the tools and the environment they operate in.
